Upcoming Epic Fantasy Release: FATE OF FIRE

In the second book of the Flight Moon Series, Fornala tries to reunite with her family. They are divided, however, trying to rally others against Shirr. The Black Waste is preparing for a war, even if the other kingdoms refuse to heed the warnings.

Excerpt from FATE OF FIRE:

No sun wakes Corban this morning. He shivers to stay off the bitter chill. Dark clouds spread themselves across the sky. It will be a wet, cold day. Not the best day to arrange traveling supplies for seven people, but then again, the rain may persuade the town's less savory characters to seek shelter inside by the fire.
Corban almost wishes that for himself. As he sits up and examines the campsite, he finds all of his companions have deserted the cold, open outdoors, save one. The overly cloaked man that Ralis had named Charland fiddles with something on the other side of the dead fire.
Good morning,” Corban speaks to the cloaked man. He nods in greeting and keeps tinkering with his project. “Where is everyone?”
In the town. I stayed to watch over you,” the strangely accented voice replies.
Corban feels a chill, and not just from the damp. Ralis trusted his life to this rogue... But, still, he has woken up sound, without a knife slit across his neck.
Why didn’t they wake me for my watch?”
They said that you needed your rest,” Charland answers.
Given no indication from the sky, Corban tests his muscles. By their stiffness he can tell he has overslept, but for how long he's not sure. The wind picks up, ushering in dark gray clouds. Corban sighs, adorning his own cloak.
As he lifts his pack to his shoulder, Corban senses a change in its weight. Something has been lifted from its contents. Trained for such minute observations, being a useful skill as a thief, Corban has gauged what is missing by the time the strap rests on his shoulder. About a third of his coin, hidden in a pocket deep inside, apparently wasn't hidden well enough. He's not surprised some of his silver is missing, he slept in the presence of thieves after all. He is surprised one of them lifted it under Ralis' nose. Unless...
Corban turns to his companion. Charland collects his things, not a glimpse revealed of his features beneath the heavy hood. Even his hands are gloved. What is he hiding?
Caution urges Corban to withdraw, but he stays his feet. Ralis must have a reason to trust him. Before he can decide how to confront this stranger, a torrent of rain and wind is unleashed from above. Corban hides his pack beneath his cloak, a better place for it when entering Dernsith anyway.
Ralis and Ditone said they would buy your supplies.” Charland startles Corban, coming up beside him without even a slosh on the wet ground.
Corban releases his tension with a deep breath. “With my coin.” It is more of a statement than a question. Charland nods with a short movement, showing a flash of yellow beneath his cloak.
I would recommend a visit to the weapon's shop. Something more substantial than a knife may do you better with what you plan on doing.”

Pondering this companion of Ralis, Corban starts towards the city. Charland walks beside him, but Corban hasn't yet decided if he should be comforted by his presence.

FATE OF FIRE

New Release: Fire Born

The first book in the epic fantasy series Flight Moon, is now available for purchase...

FIRE BORN is now available in print and ebook

Flight Moon was once the prized dragon of Gorusk. Swift and fearless, she oversaw Shirr's army with deadly beauty. But a dragon is never subservient to a human, even if he is the banished king of the Black Waste. Her plans to assassinate Shirr are thwarted. Barely able to escape, Flight Moon flees to Arnith.

Bleeding and exhausted, Flight Moon knows Shirr will eventually catch up to her. She's saved just enough strength for one last fight.

Twins are born in the kingdom of Arnith. A boy with silver hair like his elven grandmother, and a girl with a secret. A secret that if discovered, risks her life and the lives of her entire family.

Barely two weeks old, Fornala is already condemned to death. Bavun, the high mage, believes her physical deformity is a curse laid upon those who abuse magic. For this she must be sacrificed.

A dragon and an infant girl, both outmatched with impossible odds, may find strength in each other. What should kill them both, only makes them stronger.

Aerial Battle ~ Dragons!

My main character Flight Moon is in the middle of an aerial battle between her and three other dragons.

Her adversaries? A cunning, black dragon and a large earth dragon. She has already injured a smaller red dragon, who is no longer a threat.

Azrix, the black dragon, has already torn a piece off her shoulder in a previous battle.
Here is a painting that inspires me for his character:

With a head like a Nazgul dragon:

When conceptualizing the two enemy dragons, I realized that they were very characteristic of two snakes. Azrix, like the black mamba:

And the large brown dragon, like a viper:

Azrix's fighting style is modeled after the black mamba, temperamental and impulsive:

And the brown dragon, strong, patient, and direct like a viper:

Flight Moon is larger than either of them, but she must outsmart them. She is swift and agile, and has a vendetta to settle.

Corban

Meet Corban, the rogue brother of Dornata and uncle to the two twins in FIRE BORN.

This picture from Dungeons and Dragons' "Thief" reminds me of him.

When I was young, I actually thought I had made up the name "Corban", until I saw The Fifth Element with Bruce Willis playing as 'Corban Dallas'.

Corban deals with being an outcast, due to his mother being an elf, by becoming reclusive. He disappears for months at a time.

Here are some pictures that remind me of Corban:

(Yes, The Dark Knight, I know)

(He is half elf, after all)

The opening scene of FIRE BORN, Book One of the Flight Moon Series opens with him:

SAMPLE:

Corban cursed the wind. It rushed past him like a playful child. He tried to match his pace with its free wandering, but his feet couldn't keep up. No matter how fast he ran, the wind gusted easily ahead of him.
He slowed at the edge of a ravine and leaned heavily on an old pine. The wind played against his cloak, sending tendrils of snow swirling around him. Blood pounded into his numb skin as he tried to catch his breath.
The snow crunched behind him. He spun round, searching between the trees, but saw no one. He could barely hear past his heartbeat. The only movement was the snow and wind between the branches.
His brief pause caused his body to stiffen, overcome with fatigue and chill, but he forced himself to resume his race. He circled the ravine, to the cabin nestled on the opposite side. Glancing back at the forest again, he pushed open the wooden door.
A torrent of snow and wind rushed inside. Corban stayed at the threshold, the heat offering no comfort. He lifted his heavy gaze, finding the four occupants of the cabin staring at him. "They are coming for her."

Lost in a Prison

Gakulisan, a free-practicing wizard, and Foltez, a rogue assassin, are currently attempting to break into the Arnithian mages' tower to rescue two family members. Unanticipated traps have left them nearly incapacitated. Panic has set in and the scene, told from Gakulisan's point of view, is currently at a standstill.
(my inspiration for the mage's tower)

Why do I empathize so much with my characters? For two weeks I've been writing this scene, and have only been able to write a few sentences at a time. The wizard's fear and anxiety is my own, and I can't tolerate putting myself into it for a long period of time.

I keep thinking about Heath Ledger after filming The Dark Knight. The theory at the time was he had gotten so into playing the character of the Joker that it got to his head.

Back to writing. Keep a thought out for Gakulisan and Foltez that they make it through this trial unscathed. And possibly me as well. :)
